Eurovision 2012: 25 Days to Go

When the Jeds were first announced (in 2010) as being potential Irish entrants for Eurovision 2011, I'll admit I was more than sceptical, perhaps even cruel, and suggested that they had little to no chance of progressing to the final proper in Germany. I was proved more than just a bit wrong and while Lipstick has never been a song I particularly like, the sheer verve and vitality of the brothers Grimes understandably saw a a fair chunk of voterdom warming to their antics. They did well to break in to the Top 10 and while some fans bemoan the final placing of Blue in last year's show and praise Jedward to the heavens - let's remember there were only 19 points separating the two acts. The question is - is finishing eighth good enough to warrant a comeback the following year? That seemed to be the case at Irish telly as John & Edward were trundled out on to the Late Late Show for another year to face some fairly weak opposition, thus assuring another ticket to the Contest proper. I do think that Waterline is a far better song than Lipstick but whereas the latter was all about Jedward, I just think that their 2012 song is a song that merely happens to be recorded by them. It's got a High School Musical feel to it (and you could argue that the final bell rang on that franchise some time ago now) and while I would prefer to listen to this one at home than I would Lipstick, I'm not entirely sure it's the best choice for the Eurovision stage.

These boys definitely knew how to work the novelty ticket to the utmost last year and were the act getting most of the publicity by the time the final rolled along. But with Austrian swearers, a line-up of chanting pensioners and one of the most famous vocalists ever to take part in the competition (and who also happens to be over the age of 70) competing for the column inches in 2012, Jedward could be the yesterday's news that gets squeezed off the front page. The Irish delegation got the wildcard in the draw and wisely chose to have the lads singing Waterline in the final spot for the seond successive year. I would be very surprised if that doesn't see them in the final. Other than that, I really can'tee this making the Top 10 on the big night - but I was wrong about them last year and you could still have reason to be sending humble pie c/o Boom Bang a Blog on the Sunday after the show.
