Eurovision 2012: Jedward plan on doing a Lena in reverse
News just in! On another media outlet. About 24 hours ago. But forgetting all that for a moment, Ireland's top 10-finishing act in Germany, those X-Factor botherers Jedward, have announced they're having another go at scooping the Eurovision Song Contest trophy in Azerbaijan next year.
In theory, this is not such a bad move, as their semi-success with Lipstick certainly boosted the brothers' profile in some parts of Europe. It makes more sense to capitalise on this now rather wait another five years. From the titbits floating about t'net, it seems the same team who composed Lipstick and a lot of the songs on Jedward's debut album, Victory, will produce a shortlist of tunes for the Jeds to perform on a national final (presumably another Late Late Show special) with the phone dialling fingers of the Irish viewers then deciding upon the tune for Baku.
I have to be honest, I really don't know if this is a good idea or not. Jedward won't have the novelty factor they enjoyed in Germany this year and who knows what other headline grabbing act is poised out there to win a national final in one of the other 40-plus countries taking part. Such an act could easily eclipse the heroes of last year but then again, Dima Bilan took first prize two years after finishing second so if the name of Jedward's first long player does prove prophetic then it won't be unprecedented.
I did say in this very blog about 10 months ago that Jedward would stall in the semi-final stages and be nought but an embarrassment. I was wrong then so this time I might just err on the possibility of them doing rather well. Again.
