July 2011 Archives

I love this! It's two BBC News reports from Saturday, April 4, 1981. The first is from a bulletin screeend before the Contest itself, describing the security measures in place in Dublin which also mentions how the brother of a member of Irish band Sheeba is serving a life sentence. The second comes from the aftermath of the show, describing the victory of the Fizz. Whichever BBC journalist was employed to look at the scoreboard on the night wasn't paying enough attention - France were third, not Switzerland (the Swiss act finished fourth).

And how smashing that it was Kenneth Kendall who brought the British public this proud news, just months before Channel 4 snapped him up for Treasure Hunt.

This clip came from this user here. Great stuff.

The Ark: Father Of a Son

It all began when I was listening to Arkeology, the singles collection of Sweden's 2007 entrants, The Ark. It struck me that the other 19 songs on this rather superb compilation sounded a lot edgier than The Worrying Kind, the song which Ola Salo and his chums took to Helsinki.

Then I had an idea. Why not track down singles released by Eurovision acts which sound totally different to the songs submitted for the Contest? Welcome to *Other Pop Songs are Available...

So I'm starting with a tune from the very album which inspired it all.
