April 2011 Archives
Last month we announced that Paddy O'Connell would not be doing his regular stint as the BBC's commentator for the Eurovision semi-finals. This afternoon we can tell you that the job has gone to Radio 1 DJs Scott Mills and Sara Cox (pictured). It's a surprise move as the station has been loathe to even acknowledge the competition in recent years - although Scott has been a lone voice in support of Le Concours de Chanson on the supposedly trendier station and even announced the result of the British vote last year.
This is (hopefully) a sign that Blue's involvement has led the likes of Radio 1 to realise that Eurovision's 2011 line-up is a lot more relevant to the current European charts than, say, the 1989 event was to the Top 40 of its time. If they continue with this support - and continue to support the UK entry each year in terms of airplay, it will lead to us sending credible, potential winning stuff, year after year as acts stop seeing the stigma of Eurovision participation and realise its potential instead.
It's all being done in baby steps, however. Scott will commentate from London, not Germany, whereas Sara will be in and around the Esprit Arena, meeting Blue and other entrants and getting immersed in the whole thing. It should be good fun as Coxy is never known to mince her words and is definitely more in touch with what viewers want than the grating Sara Cawood has been in recent years.
Boom Bang a Blog wishes the new kids all the luck in the world. We're looking forward to hearing what you have to say.
