Eurovision 2010: Titbits and Tittle-Tattle

THERE has been a few announcements this week from various corners of the continent regarding preparations for next year's Contest in Oslo.

The first is the unfortunate news that Leichtenstein definitely won't be making its debut in Norway. Those in charge of what's best for the tellybox in Vaduz and beyond have decided that Contest participation isn't a priority at the moment, but there's no reason why the country can't be there in 2011, wherever the Contest may be.

Confirming their participation for Norway, however, is Romania and FYR Macedonia. The former has come tantalisingly close to winning the trophy in recent years, whereas the latter hasn't, but at least this news does mean the number of nations participating in Norway won't be in the teens if the rumoured withdrawals become reality.

And finally, Swedish broadcaster SVT has announced its first wildcard (that's an entrant directly invited to take part) for next year's Melodifestivalen. It's a young man called darin, who did rather well in the domestic version of Pop Idol five years ago and is currently atop the Swedish charts with his version of Coldplay's Viva La Vida.

Won't be long now before we have our first bona fide entry for next year - Albania pick their song in about seven week's time. If they're definitely still entering, that is...
