Get 'em off?

AND so the Georgian mischief-packed dream comes to an end.

Their song which wasn't so much a thinly vieled jibe at Vladimir Putin, more a jibe which hadn't been anywhere near a veil and had flashing neon arrows pointing to its jibeness from every conceivable direction, has now been chucked out of the show by the big EBU bosses. And with that chuck goes Georgia itself, it would seem, as the representatives have no interest in changing the lyrics and Georgian telly don't seem too bothered about picking a song to replace the offering from Stephane and 3G.

You'd think that was that, wouldn't you? This year's Contest has had its get-rid-of-this-song-by-crikey incident. You'd think that, but it's so not true.

Wait until you hear the fuss about this little number from Belgium...

Patrick Ouchene's Copycat is - you don't actually need Boom Bang a Blog to tell you - heavily influenced by the earlier output of one Elvis Aaron Presley and young Pat isn't backward in coming forward about the fact. It's all very dayglo, retro-tacky and fun as well. And it's that last sentence which defines where the problem lies.

A Belgian branch of the Elvis fan club is so incensed that this song and video leeches on to the King of Rock 'n' Roll with such influence-draining abandon, that they are demanding Belgian TV withdraws it from contention for this year's Contest.

As the fansite esctoday.com reports:

"According to the Elvis Presley fans, the Belgian entry makes fun of 'The King' in a tasteless way. "We are convinced that Belgium, just like Georgia earlier this week, will not make it to Moscow. If the EBU respects its own rules, Belgium should be disqualified," ElvisMatters states in a press release.

Furthermore "Section 4, rule 9 states that no swearing or other unacceptable language shall be allowed in the lyrics. This song is full of disdain, hate and bitterness. Now that we pointed out the organizers all violations of the rules, we hope that they won't have another choice than stopping this song."

However an EBU spokesperson, Sietse Bakker says "We are awaiting the letter of ElvisMatters." He goes on to say that, "At the Heads of Delegation meeting in Moscow, beginning next week, RTBF will officially submit the song to the EBU. Then we will examine if all songs comply with the rules of the 54th Eurovision Song Contest. It is up to the Reference Group (the governing body of the Eurovision Song Contest) to decide whether rules have been broken or not."

Now. Is it just us, but whereabouts in Copycat can we find the bit about disdain, hate and bitterness?

Well if the Irish could send a sock with a few feathers sewn on last year, why can't the Belgians send an animated fat cat? The main difference is that 'Copycat' is fab and loads of fun & the Irish thing....wasn't. There is a place for this sort of thing from Belgium in the ESC & good luck to them I say. Anything is an improvement on Ishtar.

Time really hasn't been kind to Eurocat.
