The Lord Speaketh Unto Us (Well, Radio 1 really...)

By Jamie McLoughlin on Oct 21, 08 01:45 PM

LloydWebber.jpgLord Andrew Sir Lloyd Webber (LASLW) has been chatting to those trendy types at Radio 1 about the Eurovision challenge which lies ahed of him in the coming months.

LASLW has some interesting things to say about the Your Country Needs You process - including some rather surprising info about the type of song he has in mind.

When asked what ditty we can expect from the musical ubermeister's pen, Lord Andrew had this to say:

"I'm quite proud of the fact that most of my musicals have had big pop hits out of them and therefore I'm going to write this for the charts - I'm not going to write it as if it's a show song.

"Unless the impossible happens - if there was a singer who came through who was really strong and wanted to do something which was essentially very dramatic.

"This song is never going to appear in a musical so it's got to stand on its own little two feet."

So, could we be hearing an uptempo bop-a-long from the winner of the UK heat early next year?

Along the course of his chat, Andy (we're going to call him that now, because we like him) revealed that no songw riting will begin until the audition process is well underway - and he's not ruling out a boyband/girlband, or taking one member out of a band which comes along for the ride - and pairing them up with another performer.

Celebrities haven't been ruled out, either. However, we hope Andy was joking when he wondered if fellow knight of the realm Cliff Richard was busy at the time of the competition (he wasn't the best live singer at either of his Contest appearances).

More importantly, Andy is fully aware of the poison chalice he has been handed, but finds the whole idea of the challenge "very interesting", adding: "I'm not going to do anything other than try and get the best song and the best act. "

Good luck to you, sir. We really mean that.
